Why Choose Our Scotches

Other companies still manufacture scotches from oak. It’s a traditional material, but not necessarily the most suitable for this application. Oak takes a long time to dry after felling, and is prone to splitting along the grain during the drying process. That weakness often shows up later as premature breakage of the machined tapers.

Other companies’ scotches are supplied untreated, leaving the timber exposed to water, oils and grease in the track environment. Over time this can weaken the structure and increase the risk of slippage in the points face.

What is a Point Scotch used for?

A points scotch is a wedge-shaped block that fits between the switch rail and the stock rail. Once inserted, the switch blade cannot close or move, effectively immobilising the point.

  • Preventing point movement – A points scotch is inserted into the switch rail area to physically block the point blades from moving. This ensures the points stay in the required position.
  • Protecting track workers – During maintenance, inspection, or signalling work, it prevents the points from being operated accidentally by signalling equipment or manual operation.
  • Ensuring a safe route is maintained – By locking the points in position, it guarantees that any train movements through the area will follow the correct route and cannot be diverted.
